The best email client for Astound email depends on three things: how many mailboxes you read, on how many devices, and whether you ever travel to Europe. Astound publishes no mail app of its own, so an rcn.com, astound.net or mygrande.net address is always read through webmail or a third party program over IMAP. For one address on a phone, the phone's built in Mail app is enough. For one address on a computer at home, Thunderbird or Apple Mail cost nothing extra. For an Astound address beside Gmail and work mail, on several machines, or for anyone who spends time in the EU, where Astound blocks webmail and IMAP outright, pick a client that connects to Astound from the United States and holds every account in one list.

The short answer, by situation

Six situations cover almost everyone who asks this. The table is the recommendation. The rest of the article explains why, gives the four sets of Astound server settings in brief, covers the errors that stop most setups, and explains the European block, which no settings site mentions.

Why there is no Astound email app

Astound Broadband is the single brand that RCN, Grande, Wave and enTouch were combined into, and it never replaced their mail systems with one of its own. What it offers is a webmail site for each family of addresses and an app called My Astound. The app's store listing is specific about what it does: pay the bill, see when the technician arrives, view twelve months of statements, enroll in AutoPay and paperless billing, play home phone voicemail and update contact details. None of that opens a mailbox. People install it expecting their rcn.com inbox and find a billing screen.

So every "Astound email app" is really a general mail program pointed at Astound's servers. That is not a bad thing. Astound still allows ordinary IMAP with your normal password and no app password, which puts it among the easiest ISP mailboxes to connect to any client. The catch is that it is not one mailbox system. It is four.

Astound email settings, in brief

Which server you type depends on the part after the @. Astound's own settings article splits it like this:

• rcn.com, erols.com, starpower.net (DC Metro, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania): IMAP imap.rcn.com, SMTP smtp.rcn.com, full address as the user name.
• astound.net, myastound.net, wavecable.com and the other West Coast domains (California, Maryland, Oregon, Washington): mail.astound.net for astound.net, and mail.<your domain> for the rest, full address as the user name.
• mygrande.net and grandecom.net (Texas outside Houston): mail.mygrande.net, and the user name alone, without the @mygrande.net.
• entouch.net (Houston): mail.entouch.net, full address as the user name.

Everywhere, incoming IMAP is port 993 with SSL and outgoing SMTP is port 587 with authentication switched on, using the same user name and password as incoming. Choose IMAP over POP. POP pulls mail onto one device and leaves the others behind, which is the opposite of what you want when you read on a phone and a laptop. The errors that stop most Astound setups

The wrong platform's server. This is the most common one, and Astound has caused it itself. In March 2025 an iPhone 16 owner on Apple's support forum described following Astound's instructions for an astound.net address and being sent to pop.rcn.com and smtp.rcn.com. It failed, and Apple and Astound each pointed at the other. It connected once both servers were mail.astound.net on ports 993 and 587. If your address ends in astound.net, nothing in the setup should mention rcn.

The Grande user name. Grande is the one platform where the login is the user name only. Most settings sites copy the full address rule from the rest of Astound, the server rejects it, and it looks exactly like a wrong password. People reset a password that was never the problem.

Error 554 5.7.1, Authentication Failed, must login. Astound's article names this one. The program is trying to send without signing in to the outgoing server. Turn on SMTP authentication with the incoming credentials, and use port 587 rather than 25, which many home and mobile networks block.

Secure password authentication in Outlook. Astound lists clear text authentication for its servers, over an encrypted connection. If the SPA box is ticked in classic Outlook, untick it.

The European block, and why it changes the answer

This is the part nobody else covers, and it decides the pick for anyone who travels. Astound's settings article says that since the GDPR rules of May 2018, its webmail, IMAP and POP cannot be used from EU countries, and it lists all 27 of them. That is not a quirk of one app. It stops the browser, the iPhone Mail app, Thunderbird and Outlook alike, because each of them connects to Astound from wherever the device is.

We tested it rather than take the article's word. From a connection in Warsaw, imap.rcn.com, mail.astound.net, mail.mygrande.net, mail.entouch.net and mail.wavecable.com all dropped the connection without a greeting. From Virginia, all five answered immediately. For a two week trip to Italy, that means two weeks without the address your bank, your doctor and your kid's school use.

The only client that avoids it is one where the connection to Astound is made in the United States on your behalf, not from your laptop. That is how a browser based client like ours works: the mailbox is connected from US servers, and you read the result in a browser from wherever you are. Connect it before you leave. The block covers EU members only; Astound's list does not include the United Kingdom, Switzerland or Norway.

Travel is also when the practical side of an old address shows up. If contracts, leases or client paperwork still land at your rcn.com address, being able to send a document out for electronic signature from the hotel laptop beats hunting for a printer at the front desk, and it only works if you can read the message in the first place.

Picking between the free and paid options, honestly

Thunderbird is the right answer for a lot of Astound customers. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, merges several accounts into Unified Folders, carries no license fee and has no trouble with a plain password sign in. Its limits are that it lives on one computer at a time, each machine needs its own setup, and it is blocked in the EU like everything else that connects from the device.

Apple Mail is the same story on a Mac: already installed, a combined All Inboxes view, and one setup per device.

Classic Outlook makes sense only if you already pay for Microsoft 365. Set it up manually with IMAP and the right host for your domain. The new Outlook for Windows handles third party IMAP less gracefully, and Microsoft's own forums are full of ISP addresses it fails to add.

A browser based client earns its price in three cases: several mailboxes across providers, read on more than one computer; a Chromebook, where a Chromebook mail app has to run in the browser anyway; or regular time in Europe. It is set up once, opens the same list everywhere, and keeps syncing while Astound's own webmail refuses you.

Should you forward Astound mail to Gmail instead?

It is the usual advice, and it has two costs. Replies go out from Gmail unless you also set up Send as, and Google removes Send as, Gmailify and POP fetch for third party addresses in January 2027. Forwarding also copies everything into a second mailbox you then have to keep clean.
