In short
There is no Outlook app for Chromebook and there has never been an Outlook desktop build for ChromeOS. Microsoft moved Chromebook users to the web experience on September 18, 2021, pulled the Android Office and Outlook apps from the Play Store for Chromebooks, and stopped updating them on November 1 that year. The supported way to read Outlook mail on a Chromebook today is Outlook on the web at outlook.com or outlook.office.com, installed to the shelf from the Chrome menu so it opens in its own window. That handles one mailbox properly. It no longer handles several, because Microsoft removed connected accounts from Outlook.com in July 2024 and retired the OneView feature in Outlook on the web between early March and late June 2026. Microsoft told affected users to move to the Outlook desktop app for Windows or Mac, which is a fix a Chromebook owner cannot apply. If your Outlook address is one of four or five you read every morning, a browser based IMAP client is the route that survives on this platform.

What Microsoft actually took away, and when
Most pages answering this question describe a Chromebook limitation. It is not one. Every step below was a Microsoft product decision, and knowing which one you are hitting tells you which fix applies.
September 18, 2021: the Android apps left the Chromebook. Microsoft transitioned Chromebook customers from the Android builds of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook to the web experiences at office.com and outlook.com. The apps were removed from the Play Store for ChromeOS devices and stopped receiving updates on November 1, 2021. Anyone who already had them installed could keep using them unsupported. This is why an Outlook icon still appears in a few old screenshots and tutorials, and why following those tutorials on a Chromebook bought after 2021 goes nowhere.
The replacement Microsoft named is genuinely good. Outlook on the web is the same interface new Outlook uses on Windows and Mac. Microsoft documents installing it as an app in Chrome and Edge, and on ChromeOS that gives you a Launcher entry, a pinnable shelf icon, its own window and notifications. Offline reading works once you enable it in settings. For one Microsoft mailbox this is a complete answer and you can stop reading here.
July 1, 2024: Outlook.com stopped holding other accounts. Outlook.com used to offer connected accounts, which pulled a Gmail or other outside address into the same inbox. Microsoft removed the feature and disconnected the accounts still using it. From that date, Outlook.com in a browser shows Outlook.com mail and nothing else.
March to June 2026: OneView and TrueTime retired in Outlook on the web. OneView let you attach personal email accounts, including Gmail and other IMAP mailboxes, to a work mailbox and read them in one view. TrueTime did the same for personal and work calendars. Microsoft announced the retirement in message center notice MC1226749, began it in early March 2026, completed it by late June 2026, and disconnected existing connected accounts automatically. Users can no longer connect a personal account inside Outlook on the web at all.
The recommended fix does not exist on ChromeOS. Microsoft directed affected users to the Outlook desktop applications for Windows or Mac, which keep multi account access. That is a reasonable instruction if you own a PC. On a Chromebook there is no desktop Outlook to move to, no Play Store listing to fall back on, and no version of Outlook on the platform that shows two mailboxes at once. That is the gap this page exists to fill.
The other common workaround is also closing. People used to route everything into Gmail using the check mail from other accounts setting, which collects outside mail over POP. Google is closing that to new users after early 2026 and supporting existing users into January 2027. It was a weak answer anyway, because POP copies messages in on a delay rather than showing the mailbox live, so building a setup on it now means rebuilding it inside a year.

Read that table by your own situation rather than top to bottom. One Microsoft mailbox and nothing else: install Outlook on the web and you are done. A managed work account plus a personal address: Thunderbird in the Linux container is the only route that holds both, and it wants roughly 8 GB of RAM to feel comfortable. Several personal and small business mailboxes where none of them is a managed Microsoft 365 account: that is the case a browser client fits, and it is the one Microsoft stopped serving. Where the platform and the problem line up
Six reasons the browser is the right place to solve this on ChromeOS
Every non browser route on a Chromebook runs inside a container that somebody has to switch on first. On a school or company managed device, that somebody is not you.
The install step is a URL
Crostini asks you to enable a developer feature and hand a virtual machine some disk. The Play Store route no longer offers Outlook at all. Opening a tab needs neither decision and no administrator approval.
Outlook mail is rarely the only mail
Almost nobody searching for Outlook on a Chromebook has just one address. There is usually a Gmail from the Chromebook itself, an old Hotmail, and something on a business domain. Merging them is the actual job.
Microsoft closed the merging routes
Connected accounts went in July 2024 and OneView went during 2026. Both removals hit the web version hardest, and the web version is the only version a Chromebook has.
Entry level hardware survives it
Desktop Thunderbird inside a Linux VM is comfortable on an 8 GB Chromebook and cramped on a 4 GB one. A tab costs what a tab costs, so the cheaper the machine the stronger this gets.
The setup follows you off the Chromebook
Chromebooks are often the travel machine or the second machine. A board you configure once opens the same way on a Windows desktop or a borrowed Mac, with no second install and no license tied to a device.
Merging is only half the problem
Five inboxes stacked into one list is still five inboxes worth of mail. A model tagging each message work, personal, receipt, newsletter or notification on arrival is what makes the pile shorter.

Check which Microsoft address you have
A personal Outlook.com or Hotmail address does not connect to Inboxes. An address ending in your employer domain and hosted on Microsoft 365 will not connect to us at all. Do this test before anything else, because it decides the whole answer.

Generate an app password per mailbox
With two step verification switched on, Gmail, iCloud and Yahoo issue a scoped credential instead of accepting your account password. Each takes about a minute in account security settings, and this is where most first setups stall.

Connect each address
Add the address and that credential per account. Common providers are detected, so the IMAP host and port fill themselves in and a business domain takes one extra field. Nothing is downloaded to the Chromebook.

People whose Outlook.com was the hub
Connected accounts made Outlook.com the place everything landed. When Microsoft removed it in July 2024 that setup came apart, and on a Chromebook there was no desktop client waiting to catch it.

A personal Hotmail from twenty years ago, a company address on a custom domain, a billing alias and one per client project. They stay separate for the client and arrive interleaved for you.

Four limits to check before you switch anything
The first one disqualifies us for a large share of the people reading a page about Outlook, so it goes first rather than last.
A managed Microsoft 365 work or school mailbox will not connect to us. Inboxes authenticates with a username and an app password. Microsoft finished retiring basic authentication for Exchange Online in April 2026, so a tenant managed mailbox now refuses that credential no matter which client is asking. On ChromeOS the working answers for a managed Microsoft account are Outlook on the web installed to the shelf, or desktop Thunderbird inside the Linux container. Personal Outlook.com and Hotmail mailboxes still work in clients that hold a Microsoft login, though never in Inboxes, which uses an app password, and Microsoft states it will to remove basic authentication from Outlook.com as well and rely only on OAuth, so treat any Microsoft address as at risk rather than settled. Test it first.
There is no offline mode. This runs in a browser tab and needs a connection. Outlook on the web caches recent mail once installed as an app, and Thunderbird in Crostini keeps a full local archive, so if you routinely work for hours with no signal, keep one of those for your main account. If your Chromebook is essentially always connected, which describes most of them, the trade costs nothing.
No calendar, no contacts, no tasks. Outlook is a suite and we are not. Google Calendar and Contacts are already on the machine. If what you want is one window holding your week as well as your mail, the honest comparison is Outlook on the web or Thunderbird, not us.
There is no permanent tier that costs nothing. Plans start at $29 a month flat for five mailboxes, with larger tiers above it. Outlook on the web came with your Microsoft account and Thunderbird has no license fee. If gathering mailboxes into one list is the entire problem, Thunderbird in the Linux container already solves it for nothing. The case for paying starts when the container is not available to you, or when the pile itself is what you are trying to shrink.
